‘Manipulated lives’ is a collection of five short stories based on relationships. The five stories illustrate the manipulative tendencies that can distort lives and the victim lose the very feeling of self-worth and perceive himself a failure or inadequate. Manipulators are everywhere and their main motive is to use the other person for their purpose and satisfy their need. They devious a plan and trick their prey. They are hard to spot. They manipulate the other being and turn the path the way they wanted.
The five stories are on five lives who become a victim of psychological manipulation from five different perspectives. An elderly lady whose past is haunted by a wrong decision. A young woman looking for a beautiful life drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled father. A teenage girl fell for her fellow student and distracts from her dream. A narcissistic pervert acknowledges his past fatal mistakes and an aging mother has to face a parent’s biggest regret.
Manipulators are masters of disguise and that is their way. They are witty, charming but tricky. They shower you first with care and love and then make you do whatever they want you to do. You sympathized with them listening to their stories and feel emotionally evoked. There and then they started controlling you and your life and turn everything the way they wanted. Soon your every move is directed by them.
The stories are themed on psychological manipulation and if we look around we find this kind of people around us who make you believe that they are victims of circumstances and life is cruel to them.
The stories are relatable and unique in style and theme. These stories need to be told and Helene did a wonderful work from plot setting to the storytelling. Every story is different in composition yet connected to the other and binds in the central theme of the book ‘manipulation’. Very well crafted stories and a fascinating read. I am impressed with the depth and the theme the author centered her stories.
